Jian Ghomeshi Trial: The Defense Rests

Jian Ghomeshi, disgraced former host of CBC Radio Program Q is facing several counts sexual assault charges. One of the women who is testifying against Ghomeshi is Lucy DeCoutere.  DeCoutere is one out of seven accusers who has agreed to publicly announce her identity. With the exception of Sarah Dunsworth, all other victims are protected under a publicity ban and are choosing to remain anonymous. Born on September 5, 1970, Lucy DeCoutere is an actress best known for her role as the character Lucy in the television series Trailer Park Boys..  

 

 

According to DeCoutere, Ghomeshi assaulted her in his apartment after the two had a dinner date. She claimed that he choked her to the point where she could not breathe, as well as slapping her several times across the face. While taking the stand, Ghomeshi’s attorney Marie Henein accused Lucy DeCoutere of being dishonest under oath. Heinman’s smoking gun was a six-page love letter from DeCoutere to Ghomeshi sent days after the alleged assault. DeCoutere defended herself by saying that the letter – as well as other affectionate e-mails she has exchanged with

 

 

Mr. Ghomeshi – do not change the fact that she was assaulted by Ghomeshi.

Several days following DeCoutere’s testimony, the presiding Judge in the case allowed a final witness to be deemed admissible despise the opposition of Mr. Ghomeshi’s defence team. The accusers concluded their case by presenting the Judge Smith with a transcript of a police statement from the final witness for the Crown, Actress Sarah Dunsworth (additionally, several Facebook messages between Ms. Dunsworth, Ms. DeCoutere (respectively) and Ghomeshi have been allowed).

 

 

Besides Lucy DeCoutere, there have been several other women that who have accused Ghomeshi of sexual assault. One of the anonymous complainants said that after her relationship with Mr. Ghomeshi began, Mr. Ghomeshi started to treat her cruelly like pulling her hair without consent or warning. Her accusations were met with disbelief from Ghomeshi’s attorney questioning the reliability of the complainant’s memory and, at times, her honesty. However, the woman stood her ground, insisting that her memories are reliable.   

In the end, Justice Horkins heard the Crown and the Defence’s closing arguments before stating that he would deliver his verdict on March 24. The Crown prosecutor’s argument regarding way the victims behaved after the alleged incidents should not affect their credibility..
