What Is Our Importance?

October 17, 2017

Why are we so obsessed with what happens to us, after we perish?

A Political Year In Review (Mid-Liberal Opinions)

January 24, 2017

With 2017 on the horizon, 2016 can be looked back upon as a depressing year, compiling a staggering number of celebrity deaths, political figure deaths, Brexit and a unbelievable election in the United States of America. Although the States are not shy to elect questionable political leaders, the trump campaign has presented the world with the rise of a populist candidate.

Black Lives Will Always Matter

November 22, 2016

What happens after a man is brutally shot and killed? Theoretically, the murderer would be arrested, charged, and held accountable for such a violent crime. This would be logical, obvious even, but that’s not what’s happening in America. Innocent people end up dead, their name scraped through the mud, their families left mourning, while an evil, violent individual remains untouched by the law. Why is this happening? Simply put, it happens because the victim is a black person living in the United States of America.

Feminism: The Modern Word for Equality?

November 22, 2016

There are a lot of opinions surrounding the current movement of feminism. It’s stressing the need for the world to be a blank page for anyone who wishes to write on it. That no one has more right to that page than others, the belief that everyone should be treated equally, and that no one should feel they are compelled to do something that they don’t want to do.

⦽ On Interpersonal Relations…

March 07, 2016

BY VAUGHN WHITTLE

I was on a group trip of sorts, and when I wasn’t messing around and having fun, I was observing my friends converse with one another . I used to be a shy dude, so it comes as natural to watch others in social situations.

It was a beautiful sight. Everyone’s eyes were engaged and warm. You’d see their pupils dilate when they talk to one another, which indicates a sense of genuine interest for what the other person is doing, or talking about. When I returned to regular school life, I found that people weren’t as interested in what I was saying. I could tell from their eyes; most of my schoolmates’ eyes were stale or cold, some with quite constricted pupils. When I really tried to look them in the eyes it would hurt.

What Is Social Media Theft?

For many of us, social media is not what it used to be. What was once a place to message friends, and upload personal pictures or videos, has now become a main outlet for media. Facebook is a great example of this. When I first got Facebook in 2010, my newsfeed was wholly filled with posts from friends and family, with the occasional cute cat video. Now, in the year of 2016, rarely does anyone post anything, and it has become a stream of third party videos and pictures, whether that be big-name media companies like UNILAD or Buzzfeed, or smaller entertainment pages.

Beyoncé: National Threat or National Treasure?

February 16, 2016

BY LAUREN SUN

On Sunday, February 7, 2016, Beyoncé Knowles performed for the second time in the Super Bowl Half-Time Show at Levi’s Stadium in California. The Half-Time Shows are always spectacular, but the stakes to impress were even higher this time considering it was the fiftieth anniversary. As usual, Beyoncé did not fail to amaze with a fierce performance of her new song Formation, alongside singer Bruno Mars. However, her performance sparked controversy online as many people believed the performance was anti-police, and represented support for the Black Panthers, a black nationalist and socialist organization. Shortly after the performance Beyoncé announced her Formation World Tour which includes a stop in Toronto on May 26th. Responding to this controversy,  Toronto City Councillor for Ward 39  Jim Karygiannis strongly feels that  the federal government should investigate the Knowles’ background before allowing her to enter the country for her upcoming world tour.

Islamophobia: The Misconception of a Religion

November 29, 2015

By Eruj Hotjay

As a Muslim, I consider myself an ambassador for my religion, my beliefs, the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). With that responsibility, I believe that it is necessary for me to stand up to all of the negative comments that are being made towards our religion, and to make known all the amazing things that Muslims have contributed to today's society. It is astonishing, how shallow generalizations made by people have been: “Islam is a religion of war!”, “The world would be at peace without Islam!”  The public is blinded by the bias of the media and do not look further to prove the pervasiveness of these claims. Now, in the wake of the Paris attacks, the prevalence of Islamophobia is increasing at an alarming rate.

WOSS Speaks - Christmas Music in November

November 17, 2015

By Elizabeth Chokler

It’s that time of year again – November. The month of Christmas music, and consequently, the Great Christmas Music Debate. The beginning of November, marked by the end of Halloween, is the official start of the Holiday Season (according to commercialism, anyways). This means that stores replace all their Halloween decorations with Christmas trees, lights, and garlands. Although such phenomenon is generally accepted as a promotional strategy in the entrepreneurial world, the rapid shift from hearing “regular” music to hearing Jingle Bells sparks a heated dispute – is it too early for Christmas music?

Lest We Forget: Has the Government Done Enough for Our Veterans?

November 15, 2015

By Rachel White

The month of November is a time of reflection and gratitude for the men and women who have fought for our country. In light of Remembrance Day, Canadians recognize the sacrifices and bravery of veterans and those currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. However, with the recent outcry of veterans and their claims to insufficient support, can Canadians recognize what their government has not done for their war veterans?
