With 2017 on the horizon, 2016 can be looked back upon as a depressing year, compiling a staggering number of celebrity deaths, political figure deaths, Brexit and a unbelievable election in the United States of America. Although the States are not shy to elect questionable political leaders, the trump campaign has presented the world with the rise of a populist candidate.

Donald Trump used a protectionist ideology to sway Americans into a hate mob. He used the racist and sexist resent that a lot of citizens repressed to gain votes from all across the nation. To reinforce his muscularity, Trump made a show by bashing his opponents with media outlets and during political debates. Nonetheless, multiple tapes and multi media outbursts were still successful in revealing how misogynistic, racist and extreme he was to the public. They painted a grim picture for America if King Donald were to take his throne. Although 2016’s election could be seen as a disaster for American politics, with ongoing riots demanding him step down, Trump for better or worse is the candidate America’s citizens selected. The citizens of The United States of America chose a leader that they may not want or need, but definitely deserved.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Canada is facing the exact opposite situation to the states. Justin Trudeau has become an amazing symbol of peacekeeping and acceptance towards Canada and the world. Although most may not agree with his budget, it is hard to argue that he does not act or speak out on important issues in a positive and progressive light. This can be seen in his persistence in enacting climate change measures such as the carbon tax and persistence of feminist and pro gay right ideals.

As political events like Brexit and the Trump election continue to leave an effect across the free world, Trudeau seemed to be the only progressive country leader in the forefront of world politics. Hopefully the fallout of these events in 2016 will lead to an eventual silver lining in 2017
