Women In Careers Coaches Dinner (WACC) 2018

On Thursday, March 22 at the Burlington Convention Centre, the Halton Industry Education Council held its annual Women in Careers Coaches Dinner.  The objective of this banquet was to help alleviate some of the angst centered around both academic and life choices by showing the attending young women, grades nine to twelve, that “careers are a journey of discovery; the ebbs and flows will take you in many different the directions.”  The theme of the night: “just because you wander, doesn’t mean you are lost”, reflected this idea thoroughly.

On February 14th, 2018, Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people, comprised of teachers, and students at Stoneman Douglas High School with an AR-15.  He had a lengthy history of threatening behavior, had often been described as a loner and someone with a temper. The FBI has been alerted and Nikolas had been placed on their watch list. Despite small efforts from gun regulation laws in the United States, Cruz still was able to obtain a firearm.However, could this have happened in Canada, if the situation was the same?

   

Ontario’s Minimum wage to increase to $15 per Hour by 2019

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced amendments to the Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Act on Tuesday May 23, 2017. New implementations include an increase in minimum wage from $11.40 to $15 per hour by 2019.

Pitbulls: Cute or Dangerous?

Montreal adopted its controversial pitbull ban on Tuesday, September 27 after a very heated debate between the local politicians. The city council voted 37-23 in favour of the bylaw which bans new pit bull-type dogs from entering the city as well as restricting current dogs and owners in Montreal in the next month.

The Lowdown

 

On Friday, the two week sexual assault trial of disgraced former CBC Radio host of “Q”, Jian Ghomeshi, came to a close, having undergone a fascinating course.

 

The trial began on February 1st, taking place in Toronto’s Old City Hall, under the Ontario Court of Justice.

 

As had been opted for by the defendant, Ghomeshi was tried before a single judge, the honourable William Horkins, with no jury, nor a preliminary inquiry.

 

Ghomeshi plead "not guilty" to five charges; “four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance and choking.”

Jian Ghomeshi, disgraced former host of CBC Radio Program Q is facing several counts sexual assault charges. One of the women who is testifying against Ghomeshi is Lucy DeCoutere.  DeCoutere is one out of seven accusers who has agreed to publicly announce her identity. With the exception of Sarah Dunsworth, all other victims are protected under a publicity ban and are choosing to remain anonymous. Born on September 5, 1970, Lucy DeCoutere is an actress best known for her role as the character Lucy in the television series Trailer Park Boys..  



 

Canadian Government Delays Refugee Plan

The Canadian government has recently announced a delay in their plan to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015, the extension has been set to February 2016. This was a significant pledge in Trudeau’s political campaign, however they have justified their decision by stating that the delay will give provide more time for the government to screen refugees and provide resources for them to better integrate into Canadian society.

Trudeau accepted the weight of the nation’s future upon his shoulders, continuing a legacy that began when his father first took this very same oath 36 years ago.

In the months before the election, Trudeau was an unlikely candidate as he was considered too young and too inexperienced; now, at age 43, he is the second youngest Prime Minister in Canadian history. Subsequently, plaguing the minds of all, are his plans for our future. Though he may be the best looking leader our nation has ever had, do we really know the implications of his platform for the long run?
