The Lit Society - the WOSS Book Club

April 12th 2016  - Jocelyn Knibutat

One of the less known, yet engaging extracurriculars at White Oaks is book club. This year, it is run by Ms. Robinson and Ms. Sadeghi*, in room A210.

The club takes place once a month for an hour (3-4pm) after school on Mondays. The exact date for each month’s discussion is decided in the previous meeting and is sent out in an email afterwards.

The members of this club engage in lively discussions, on a book chosen by mutual agreement. This makes it so that a variety of genres are read, and less popular books are picked. Some of this year's choices include, All the Light we Cannot see (Anthony Doerr), An Ember in the Ashes (Sabaa Tahir), and finally April's selection, Never let me go (Kazuo Ishiguro).

After a group discussion, Unsa Kazi, a member of the club commented “Truly speaking, my favourite was The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It kept me on the edge on my seat the whole time.”

When asked about their opinions on book club, members answered with great enthusiasm, “It is a great place to be because you read different books and meet new people. It is a great place to be for all the book lovers out there.”

The discussion itself is run by the student who selected the book, and is done in any format they wish. This can include guessing the characters, creating a mind map of  the love interests on a blackboard, or writing short and creative pieces. For the rest of the members, all the preparation you need is to have read the book and come ready to share your thoughts on it.

For those who sound interested, new members are always welcome! Listen to the announcements for more information, or contact one of the teacher supervisors for more details. Our next meeting is April 25th!
