Farewell Ziggy Stardust

February 16th 2016  - Matthew MacDonald

David Bowie has died.

Born in Brixton, England on January 8th 1947, David Bowie started to make music in the 1960’s and, from there he took us on a lyrical journey through every decade. His music in the late sixties was odd and very different from the music that was being released at the time. From the very beginning, Bowie was different, and definitely worth listening to. His music  was a weird mix of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, with a very psychedelic twist that made him standout in the massive pool of British artists.

It wasn't until  the 1970’s where Bowie became a full blown icon. This decade saw David transform into the one of his most enduring characters: Ziggy stardust. Ziggy was a persona that allowed him to experiment and be himself by being someone else. Being Ziggy made David a household name and allowed people to see that he wasn’t just following trends he was creating them. From there David recorded hit after hit. Songs like Fame, Starman, Rebel Rebel, Moonage Daydream and many more became massive global hits that thrust him into superstardom

Then came the 1980's. The 1980’s let David try his hand in the pop music market. He stopped the Ziggy character and just became himself. This was the decade that David released some of his most popular albums and singles albums like Just DanceTonight and Never Let Me Down the motion picture album. These albums were some of the most popular albums of the decade and made David a more of a household name.

From the 1990's onward, Bowie slowed down his output and started to release albums less often (only releasing a hadnful of albums 1990 until 2016). His final album titled Blackstar which was released on January 8th 2016, two days before he passed away. This was David’s final album and is one of his strongest. The album is a look at his life and the inevitability of his death which Bowie knew was imminent

David Bowie succumbed to Cancer on January 10th, 2016. He died peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Manhattan, New York. Bowie is survived by his wife Iman and two children Duncan (44) and Alexandria (15).
