The First Lady That Could

Tehreem Kashar

The clocks are winding down in the last three weeks until the election, but the candidates certainly aren’t. On October 7, a video was released from 2005, showing Donald Trump stating many inappropriate things about women, but afterwards claiming  it was “locker room talk”.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in the many offensive comments Trump has said about women over the years, calling them fat, pigs and slobs. Many people, such as Trump’s running mate Mike Pence and wife Melania Trump, have stated their disapproval of these statements In addition, Senator Paul Ryan has stated that he will no longer endorse Trump, but focus on congressional matters for the rest of the election, as national polls are sinking for Trump and an impending Clinton government looms near.

Someone else who has now spoken out about Trump’s comments is First Lady Michelle Obama. Throughout the run of this election, she, along with her husband, has been an advocate for Hillary Clinton, speaking at many of her conventions, endorsing and praising her highly. She has stayed very silent on the topic of Trump, and has not pointed fingers during this election, but tried for the focus to remain on the Democratic nominee.

In a New Hampshire rally on October 13, Michelle spoke candidly about what is at stake in these elections, which directed her comments towards Trump’s behavior these elections. Her straight from the heart attitude during the thirty minute speech brought to light the reality that that man could be the next President.

In her speech full of raw emotion, Michelle reminded the women of their country, of their value and worth and of the respect that they deserve. She reminded us of the alarming, overpowering influence he has on the people, most importantly the children. Not only are young girls made to feel worthless and nothing but an object, boys then find okay to make these statements as well.

We were also reminded of the great influence Michelle Obama has had over the United States in the past 8 years. Being the first African- American First Lady, she had to break many of the “angry black woman” stereotypes she faced in the 2008 elections. She has since shown America her great capability to bring a nation of all races and genders together, and to bring back the principles America was built on. Her numerous campaigns, such as “Let’s Move!”, which promotes healthy living, and her undying support in girls rights and education, military families and more, Michelle Obama’s mantra of  “When they go low, we go high”, seems to be the motto America is need of following.

In these elections, there have been many lows, from email scandals to tax returns. In these last few weeks, as the Obama reign comes to a close, every last vote will count in determining the future of America. No matter the outcome, the test of time will be to see if the nation really can “go high”.
