Leonard Cohen: A Musician Like No Other

Jenna Pearce

Leonard Norman Cohen was best known during his singing career for his low voice, which made him very popular in Montreal. His lyrics were described as poetry, he would choose his words so carefully and manage to make a song so beautiful simply through the  poetic, and deep lyrics. The 7th of November 2016 saw the end of a magical musical era.

When remembered by his son-in-law, Rufus Wainwright said:

“I’d love it when it was just him and his guitar. He was a magnificent guitarist… I said I wouldn’t sing Hallelujah (a song composed and performed originally by Leonard Cohen) again… But then Leonard died, and that song moves people so much, I felt like I had to… I think it’s a tragedy that we lost the man now”. He remembered Cohen as being a gentle, artistic soul, and had only fond memories to share in the article he published in remembrance.

L’il Andy, a country singer who greatly admired Cohen and his musical career, revamped his whole performance when he heard about Cohen's death. They (he and his band) sang only Cohen songs the whole set, but that wasn’t enough of a tribute to the music hero for them. L’il Andy and a few other musicians who had been influenced by Cohen through their music career met and decided to do a more official tribute. On thursday the 8th of December they held their memorial. The concert was so popular that it sold out shortly after having been announced.

On January 14 2017, at the Meriton Festival Village during the Sydney Festival a Cohen concert will be taking place to commemorate his life for his fans in Australia. Musicians such as Jack Ladder, Holiday Sidewinder (Bridezilla), Broads, Elana Stone (All Our Exes Live In Texas) and Lindsay 'The Doctor' MacDougall will be performing.

Leonard Cohen had a gift with music, so it should come as no surprise that he won awards all through his musical career, and the awards are as follows:

1986 - The Genie award for Best Achievement in Song;

1991 - He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame;

1993 - Danish Grammy Award for Foreign Male Singer of the Year;

1993 - Juno Award for Best Male Artist;

1994, 2013 -  Juno Award for Best Songwriter of the Year;

2008 - Grammy Award for Album of the Year;

2010 - Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award;

2015 - He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame;

2015 - Juno Award for Album of the Year.

There is no debating Cohen’s musical gifts when faced with his list of achievements. The world of music will miss him, and so will his family.

In short, the world will be a colder place without Cohen's spirit in the world. He will be missed by the musicians who grew up with him, and were inspired by him. He will be missed by all who knew him.
