Leicester City Soars to the Top of Premier League Table

November 22nd 2015  - Arnav Gill

It was a weekend of cheers, booing, and happy chants, as the 13th week of the Barclays Premier League ensued. Many believed it would be a weekend of much the same thing, with Manchester City, and Arsenal running away with comfortable winnings, but the weekend proved to be a disaster for both of them. Instead the weekend worked in favour of Leicester City lads, who did the unexpected.

The weekend opened up, with a match between Manchester City and Liverpool. It started badly for Manchester City, with player Eliaquim Mangala letting in an own goal. As the first half marched on, the hopes of a Manchester City win seemed to disappear, with goalie Joe Hart letting in 2 more goals. Despite their losses, Manchester City managed one goal before the end of the first half, with a subtle shot from Sergio Aguero just outside the box. With the end of the second half in sight, Liverpool could not resist another shot; with just eight minutes of play left, Martin Škrtel made a goal. Ending with a dismal 1 – 4, Manchester City was knocked down to third place on the Premier League table by the end of the weekend.

It was a similar story for Arsenal, who lost 1 - 2 to West Bromwich Albion. The match started off favourably for Arsenal with, Olivier Giroud scoring a beautiful header just 28 minutes in. The celebration didn’t last long, as 34 minutes in James Morrison scored West Brom’s first goal, with a wicked fast shot from inside the box. The first half finished in disaster for Arsenal as player Michael Arteta let in an own goal with just 5 minutes to go.

Amid the sad losses of Arsenal and Manchester City, cheers of joy rang out as Leicester City took on Newcastle United, and won 3 – 0. It had a late start, with the first goal coming during the 2 minutes of added time in the first half. With some spectacular passing work, Jamie Vardy was able to secure a positive base for Leicester. As the match crept on into the second half, Leonardo Ulloa came through at 62 minutes in with a fast header, adding a second goal. Finally, like the icing on the cake, player Shinji Okazaki tipped the ball over the goal line, making a striking 3 – 0 score line.

It proved a devastating weekend for many of the premier league’s favoured teams who were hoping to hold onto top spots of the table. However the weekend brought with it a Leicester City that is willing to prove it has what it takes to come home as league champions this season.
