On December 7, 2016, Pakistan lost one it’s biggest, most influential legends. Junaid Jamshed, was a pop star turned religious singer who devoted his life to the teachings of Islam. Unfortunately, he was killed while on board the Pakistan International Airlines flight that crashed.

 

There were 47 other people on board, 5 of which were crew members. The 42 passengers included, Jamshed and his wife, which of whom all died when the plane crashed on it’s way to Islamabad from Chitral. The death toll also included two infant passengers.

 

There were three cockpit members on board, the captain, a trainee pilot, and a first officer. One of the crew members had made a mayday call in which, according to PIA Chairman Azam Saigol, they had lost control of one of the two engines. Although, they were confident that the plan could land safely with one engines.

 

Sadly, the was not possible. Tragedy hit, and the plane crashed. It crashed into the mountains near Abbottabad and Havelian. The PIA chairman stated it was “highly unlikely that this was a terrorist attack."

 

The victims of the crash were transferred to different hospitals in Islamabad. In a statement released by PIA, they said 500,000 rupees ($5,000) cash will be given to the next of kin of the 47 victims to meet funeral expenses.

 

Junaid Jamshed, a pop star turned religious singer who was part of one of the most influential pop bands of the 1980s in Pakistan, transitioned from singing hit songs to singing religious music, known as nasheeds.

 

In the 1980s, Jamshed was part of the largely successful band, Vital Signs. The band was very prominent in the ever-changing rock music scene of Pakistan in the 80s. In the mid 1990s, Junaid Jamshed left the band to pursue a solo singing career that was very successful. Then, in 2004, Jamshed left the pop music industry and began to sing religious songs and went on to release many religious albums after that.


Fans of the singer shared their reactions on twitter, and gave their condolences to his family and friends. The nation will forever remember him, and the 46 other victims.
