Pink Week At WOSS

By: Rory Banfalvi

Pink. Well, we all know it’s a colour but from October 1st to October 31st at White Oaks, it meant so much more.  This year we celebrated national breast cancer awareness month with huge success.  Every student that wore pink showed that they supported a cause bigger than the colour, breast cancer.

Breast cancer can affect every part of a woman’s life, not just their health.  Dr. Vincent T DeVita Jr has found in his studies that young women tend to have issues adjusting to the knowledge that they have breast cancer and the stresses of it.  Not only does it leave surgical scars on their bodies, but it leaves scars in places that will never heal.  It can cause both social and emotional difficulties in functioning and this can remain with the women throughout their entire lives even if they have rid themselves of the horrible disease.  So, when we support the cause of breast cancer we do not only support those who struggle to beat it, but we support those who live clean of cancer but not of its lasting grip on their lives.

This October we saw just how much support White Oaks was able to provide.

We hosted a myriad of fundraisers that left everyone impressed.  The fact that so many sported the WOSS pink shirts, showed that the high school community stood as one against this terrible ailment.  Overall, a profit of approximately $500.00 was made on the campaign.  On top of the wonderful pink shirts, there was also two bake sales (one run by the Wildcat Spirit Squad and one by the athletic council), a pizza sale, a Krispy Kreme sale, a fire truck pull and...THE BUY-IN GAME!!!

For weeks leading up to the game, you could feel the excitement growing and the nerves kicking in here at WOSS. At the game, we were privileged to have played a great school, Burlington Central. We were also lucky to have had sideline cheerleaders and an awesome halftime show that the spirit squad took many hard and long practices to put together.  Even though we lost the pink game, 26-8, we did score our first touchdown of the season and the boys never lost hope, they kept fighting and played their hardest right until the end!  During that game, onlookers had the chance to buy some sweet treats as the Krispy Kreme sale took place, making a whopping $300.00 and paired with the pizza sale, a total of $500.00!  Great job WOSS!  Through all of the fundraisers that the Wildcats were lucky enough to host, we raised $3000.00  and all of it went to charities that work towards helping breast cancer and the movement behind it.

Hopefully next year pink week will pass with as much success as this year and our football team will be ready to kick both cancer’s butt and the other team’s!  Gooooo Wildcats!
